Installation Guide for FENFA Silicone Structural Sealants

SERVICEABLE RANGE

The basic request, prior preparation, process and quality test of FENFA silicone structural sealants are included in this installation guide, which is suitable to the construction of FENFA silicone structural sealants.

BASIC REQUEST

1.     The users can obtain reliable products and cogent technical assistance when they buy FENFA silicone structural sealants from FENFA rubber products Co., LTD or the appointed sales agencies.

2.     The design and the installation of the hidden frames and semi-hidden frames glass curtain wall must obey the requirement in JGJ 102-2003- The Technical Specification for Glass Curtain Wall. The design of joints is calculated according to the equations in technical specification. δ is 0.14 for FF9229 and 0.12 for two- component products.

3.     The operating personnel must be familiar with the construction process of Silicone Sealants, understand the save reliability of curtain wall and the engineering charts, and know the condition of the complete materials, because the sealing quality depends on the responsibility and qualification of operating personnel.

4.     The operating personnel should master the basis knowledge of technical safe and the checking method of disable seal. The optimal construction condition is that the temperature is between 15 and 27 and relative humidity is between 40% and 80%. The temperature should not exceed 4~40 and the relative humidity should not below 30%. The construction can’t be proceeding in rain or snow.

5.     All elements should have identifying mark. The identifying mark can be used to trace the producer, the date, the batch of sealants, and the position of element in curtain wall.

6.     The users should contact with the technical section quickly if there are quality or technical questions in the construction process and you can obtain circumspect technical service in time. The construction process should be stopped before when there is grave quality question and the process can continue if the information is obtained from the technical section.

PRIOR PREPARATION

1.       Adhesion test, compatibility test and pollution test

The adhesion test, consistency test and pollution test should be carried out by FENFA rubber products Co., LTD for all building materials contacted with the sealants. The users should provide the basis materials and commission us to test. and materials with surface coat and surface treatment. The materials could be used in construction after the serviceable report is providing by us.

Adhesion Test  The number of glass or other plate in the adhesion test should be greater than there and the size is 150mm×75mm.

Compatibility Test   The compatibility test should be carried out for the assistant materials (such as glue tape and foam rod) in the construction process; the length of each material in test shouldn’t be less than 100mm.

Pollution Test  The number of samples is there and the size is 250mm×250mm.

The samples should be preventing to drop out and damage in package when the samples were sent by EMS.

The test period is 35 days. The test will be carried out in time after we receive all materials. The preliminary results will be sent to the user by fax and the formal results will be sent to the user in time.

2.       Service of engineering auditing

We have very important experience. Our technical personnel can help the user to check the structural interface design, select the most suitable interface design and structural sealants. The user should send the detail drawing of typical (in horizontal and vertical direction) and special interface, wind pressure value of the building and other parameters to us. In order to obtain the most suitable node and joint designs, the binding nodes of silicone structural sealants will be checked and the sizes of structural joints will be checking computations based on JGJ 102-2003- The Technical Specification for Glass Curtain Wall.

The special and nonstandard test can be processed by us; however, we don’t take any charge of nonstandard test. The auditing and advice for any engineering design, building drawing or similar files are only based on the test results at our laboratory; we don’t take any charge of the comment and advice except for the characters of products manufactured by FENFA.   

CONSTRUCTION PROCESS

The common process of FENFA silicone structural sealants was described in this installation guide. A good bonding quality can be obtained if the construction personnel follow the process. However, the construction process couldn’t confirm all bonding quality because silicone structural sealants will be used in many different environments.    

1.       Clean  Joint surfaces must be clean, dry, dust free and frost free. The temporary adhesive tape can be pasted to protect the place around the cleaned surface of basis materials.

2.       Primer     If required, primer is applied to the clean surfaces.

3.       Strike sealants    In order to ensure the sealants ejected from the muzzle are continuous and cylindrical, the sealants should be injected into the joints continuously; the diameter of muzzle should be less than the joints thickness, so that the muzzles can arrive at 1/2 depth of the joints. The movement of muzzle should be slow, which ensures that the sealants in joints are full and there are no gas bubble or cavity in the joints. The special mixed machine should be used for two-component structural sealants.

4.       Scrape sealant Modification should be carried out immediately after the injection of sealants has been completed. In order to confirm that the contact between the sealants and the basis materials is sufficient, the excess sealant should be put into the joints by applying a positive pressure with tools. The temporary adhesive tape can be removed.

The labels with date and number should be pasted on the elements immediately after the process mentioned above, and then the elements were put into the curing region. In order to obtain good bonding quality, displacement between the aluminum frame and glass shouldn’t occur in the movement. 

Curing method:

a.       Solidified region should be clean and ventilated. The temperature should be 10 40 and the relative humidity should be 5090%. The curing time should extend if the relative humidity is below 50%.

b.       The elements should be inactive and unloaded in enough curing time. In order to obtain enough bonding, the curing time should be greater than 21d and 14d for one-component and two-component structural sealants, respectively. The elements can be conveyed and installed after the test of cutting sealants is eligible.

c.        Two-surface sealants coating should be used when the design width of joints is greater than 16 mm. Two-surface glue rods were put in the middle of joints and the sealants were brushed on two surface glue rods, which can avoid the effect of air permeability on the deep solidification.  

SURFACE CLEANING OF BASIS MATERIALS

All loose material, greasy dirt, and other contaminants should be removed from the bonding surface substrates to which the structural silicone will be adhered.

1.       The cleaning solution marked in the adhesion test can be used. Isopropanol(IPA), MEK or xylene can be used if there is no instruction, however, xylene is greatly toxic, it is more suitable to use Isopropanol and MEK.

2.       Basis cleaning method(cleaning with double cloth)

The solvent is brushed to the surface by a depilatory cotton cloth and is removed with the dirty by the other cotton cloth before the solvent volatilizes. In order to avoid the dirty covering the surface of basis materials again, the solvent shouldn’t be airing naturally. A perching knife wrapped with cotton cloth can be used to clean the narrow and deep joints.

3.       Sealants must be constructed in one hour after the surface of basis materials is cleaned, or the cleaning surface was exposed to rain or dirty, the surface must be cleaned again.

4.       The solvent in the container should be dumped on the cotton cloth; otherwise the clean solvent would be dirtied easily, which would affect the cleaning quality. The clean cotton cloth should be replaced in time if it is dirty.

5.       The field should be ventilating and non-fireworks because the solvent is flammable, explosive and slightly poisonous, safeguard are necessary in sometimes.

THE BOTTOM PAINT APPLICATION

1.       There is good bond quality between FENFA Silicone Sealants and most basis materials without the bottom paint. The user must use the appointed bottom paint when the bottom paint is necessary marked by FENFA rubber products Co., LTD in adhesion test.

2.       The bottom paint should be used on the cleaned surface of basis materials before sealants are applied.

3.       Thin and uniform bottom paint is applied on the surface by the clean and depilatory cotton cloth. Don’t apply too much bottom paint.

4.       Sealants must be applied after the bottom paint dry, which will affect the bonding result.

5.       The drying time of bottom paint is in 20 seconds. It may be excess or disable if the drying time is too long.

6.       Bottom paint is dangerous at sometimes, which is similar with cleaning solution. the safe practice should be adopted.

CHECKING OF CONSTRUCTION QUALITY

4.1 Appearance checking

In order to ensure there is no bubble or cavity in the joint, appearance checking should be carried out on the basis materials surface after the construction was complete. The position in joints should be cut and filled with sealants in time if there are bubbles or cavities.

4.2 Butterfly test

Butterfly test should be carried out for two-component sealant before the sealant was injected to the joints or the injection was begun again. This method is suitable to test the uniformity of two-component sealant. The properties of sealants will change enormously if the sealants are non-uniform. The construction process could be continued after two-component is uniform.     


l          The paper was spread after it was folded along the size. The mixed sealants were brushed on the paper along the folio line;

l          Fold and extrude the paper, the sealants was dispersed to a hemicycle folium;

l          Open the paper and observes the sealants.

The sealants can be used to construction if the color is uniform that is to say the sealants were mixed uniformly and vice versa. More sealants should be used to do butterfly test if the sealants were non-uniform. The follow method, Checking and maintaining the equipment, cleaning the mixing device, the pipe and the syringe, checking the component, adjusting the valves, will be carried out if the non-uniform stripes occur continually. The two-component sealant can be used to construction after it is fully uniform.

The results should be completely recorded so that the user can check later. 

4.3 The time of tensile failure

The time of tensile failure can be carried out after the two-component sealants were mixed uniformly. This method is used to test the solidification speed and determine the proportion between the basis materials and the solidified agent.


l          The mixed sealants were put into a small container;

l          A wood rod was inserting into the center of sealants, record the time from the mixed beginning;

l          Lift the wood rod and extract the sealants every 5 min. If the extracted sealants were linear and non-fracture, that was to say, it h, adn’t a, rrived at the time of tensile failure. The test was continued until the sealants fractured suddenly. The time of tensile failure is the time from the mixed beginning to the sealants fractured. The time of tensile failure of normal two-component is between 20 and 60 min, otherwise the proportion between the basis materials and the solidified agent should be adjusted.

Attention:

1.       The proportion between A and B is 10/1 for our products, however the user can adjust the proportion between 8/1 and 12/1(Volume ratio).

2.       The solidified agent is high activity and easily hydrolyzes, so the solidified agent should be hermetically stored.  

4.4 The skin drying test, the solidification time test and the rebound test

In order to confirm the leveling-up time and the complete solidification time, the skin drying test, the solidification time test and rebound test should be carried out for each batch.

l          The sealants were smeared on the plastic film and the thickness was 2mm.

l          Use suitable tools to slightly touch the sealants surface every several minutes.

l          The sealants were dry when the sealants surface couldn’t stick the tools any more. The time from construction beginning to surface drying is the skin drying time.

l          Peel off the sealants from the plastic film after it solidified for 24hours. Extend the sealants slowly to judge whether the sealants completely solidify and have the characters of elastic rubber. Remove the external force before the sealants is extended to breakpoint, observe whether the sealants can basically come back to the primary length.

The sealants have solidified if it can be extended and rebound; the sealants haven’t completely solidified if it can’t be extended or rebound. This batch product may be out of time or the storage condition is not suitable. The user should stop construction and contact with us.

The results should be completely recorded so that the user can check later.

4.5 The peel cementation test

The peel cementation test must be carried out in the manufacturing process of glass curtain wall. An actual basis material is used to do Adhesion Test. The processing method of surface is same as the engineering condition and manufactured and curing with the glass curtain wall.

l          Clean the basis materials surface by the solvent solution and primer used in actual engineering;

l          Bond breaker was pasted on one end of the basis materials;

l          Suitable sealants which is about 100mm×50mm×3mm was spread on the basis materials. The length of sealants was least 50mm on the bond breaker.

l          In order to confirm that the sealants bond completely with the surface, it is necessary to modify the sealant.

l          The peel cementation test should be carried out near the movement time of the curtain wall elements. Take off the sealants from the bond breaker and pull it at 180 degree. Observe the damage condition which is bonding damage or cohesive damage and record the area of bonding damage. The bonding power between the sealants and basis material is eligible if the cohesive damage occurs before the peeling generates. The construction technology is iffy if the sealants fracture at the point included air pores or defects. 


In order to check whether the structural sealants completely solidify and the binding property is good at all interfaces; the test mentioned above must be carried out before the curtain wall needs to be moved or transported. The elements without complete solidify will be damaged or lose the binding property in the movement if the adhesion test don’t carried out before the elements are moved. The curtain wall could subject to load except that the sealants have completely solidified.

The results should be completely recorded so that the user can check later.

4.6 Adhesion test of finished products

This method is destructive for the sealants injected in joints and suitable to check the binding property of structural sealants in filed assemblage. The problem, such as non-clean basis materials, unsuitable primer, incorrect joints assemblage, illogical joints design and other effect factors, can be found. This method was carried out after the sealants completely solidified, the complete solidify is commonly between 7 and 21 days.


l          Horizontally cut the sealant along the width direction of joint size up to the basis materials surface.

l          Vertically cut the sealant about 75mm at the horizontal cut. The cut direction is along the two sizes of joint between the sealant and basis materials.

l          Closely nip the 75mm end of the sealant and pull it at 90 degree. Observe the damage condition which is bonding damage or cohesive damage and record the percent of cohesive damage. The sealant should be fractured or extended to the scheduled value in the test process if the binding power is eligible.

New sealants can be used to repair the fractured joint if the binding power is eligible. In order to obtain good binding power, the same sealants and construction method should be used to repair the test position. The sealants surface should be clean and the joint should be filled with the new sealants. The sealants closely contact with the former sealants surface.

The results should be completely recorded so that the user can check later.

Attentions: The information in this paper is correct. The users should understand the productions minutely and determine the optimal using method.
